Sunday 21 June 12pm - 6pm: Chill-Day Festival

Bristol will throb with chill-out rhythms when the city's coolest free music festival takes place at St George's on 21 June. The Chill-Day is a family-friendly event, funded by Arts Council England, South West, and marks the climax of National Refugee Week 2009 with world music, dance, food and storytelling.

The cultural extravangaza forms part of the year long Migrations festival celebrating the cultural richness of people across Bristol and the South West. Over 1,000 Bristolians are expected to attend the event being held in the gardens at St George's – one of Britain's leading concert halls and recording studios.

The festival provides an eclectic line-up of local performers performing global music, poetry and other captivating performances. The day takes place at the end of National Refugee Week, the UK-wide programme of events celebrating the contribution of refugees to the UK.

Gillian Taylor, Arts Council England, South West spokesperson, said: ' Bristol is a vibrant city with global roots. This summer festival day will connect the rhythms of the world with the city's cultural heritage. We're delighted to fund this event which offers something for everyone.'

The event will open with St Paul's Carnival Procession, a precursor to St Paul's Afrikan Caribbean Carnival (4 July), which will slip into a live gypsy jazz performance, followed by Somalian folk music and Afro-Caribbean rock.

Pan-African dances will be taught in special workshops through the day and world cinema films and clips will be on show throughout the festival.

A children's area and special storytelling yurts will also be open on the day while adventurous foodies will be inspired by the delicious global tastings served in the tantalising 'Taste the World' tent.

As the dusk settles the day will be rounded off with traditional South African songs, mesmerising dances, east-west folk and groovesome afro-pop.
